Electrical Service Size Calculator
Quick estimate of service size (100A / 150A / 200A) based on square footage and major appliances. Simplified NEC 220.82 standard method — not a substitute for a full load calc on install.
How it works
NEC 220.82 applies 3 VA per square foot for general lighting and receptacles, plus 1500 VA for small appliance circuits and 1500 VA for laundry. Major appliances (range, dryer, water heater, AC, EV charger) add their nameplate VA. The first 10,000 VA is taken at 100%; remainder at 40%.
Divide total demand by 240V to get amps. Common service sizes: 100A serves up to about 24,000 VA, 150A up to 36,000 VA, 200A up to 48,000 VA, 400A for larger homes.
