How it works
Roof area is calculated as footprint × pitch multiplier. Pitch multipliers account for the slope: a 4/12 roof has a multiplier of ~1.054, a 6/12 is ~1.118, an 8/12 is ~1.202, and a 12/12 is ~1.414. The result is the actual surface area of the roof, not the projected footprint.
Waste factor: add 10% for simple roofs, 15% for moderate complexity, 20%+ for cut-up roofs with multiple valleys and hips. This is the extra material to account for cuts, overlaps, and starter courses.
